MOTHERS' UNION BRANCH PRESIDENT'S NEW YEAR'S MESSAGE

It is almost the end of another year. While some of us will be celebrating the fact that we did accomplish our goals, many of us will be looking back at the year just finished and feeling a bit disappointed at the fact that many of the promises that we made to ourselves were never accomplished.

As we look towards 2023 maybe the time has come for us to sing a new song of transformation. Rather than trying to make resolutions that we might never keep, how about looking at the new year as a time to try something new and transforming ourselves both physically and spiritually? Making ourselves more Christlike? Confused about how to do that? Here are some tips to help you guide you on that path:

Choose a Bible study group and start attending Bible study. There are many of these groups meeting in churches and homes or via Zoom. They are free and all it takes is for you to set aside some time one day per week to do this;

Spend time intentionally reading and reflecting on Scripture daily. While Scripture reading plans are useful, they may contribute to a “check-the-box” approach. Choose to develop a rhythm that feeds you. For some, this may involve listening to Scripture instead of, or as a supplement to reading. For others, this may involve reading bite sized chunks during the week and spending a longer time in reflection on the weekends. There is no one-size fits all approach. The goal is to be intentional in spending time with God;

Adopt healthy habits. The price of food and the gym may make this challenging for most of us but there are walking groups that are free, and cutting just one less healthy item from your daily diet can have a transformative effect on your life;

Our upcoming Valentine Fun Run (11 February 2023) could assist you with setting goals and achieving them;

If you have health related issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure or any other lifestyle disease, focus on changing any habits which can reduce the effects of these illnesses. For diabetics, consider foregoing sugary food and drinks and for those with hypertension, less or no salt in your diet.

Use your time, talent and treasure. Many of us wonder how we can give back to our Church and to our community. Check out the various ministries within your Church and your community and offer your time and your talent. You will be glad you did!

This coming new year offers so many possibilities for transformation and to start fresh. Don’t be down in the dumps that 2022 didn’t meet expectations. 2023 is about to show you that you can start over and get it right!
